About us

After South Africa’s electrifying triumph of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Ed Nisbett—a passionate rugby coach and physical education teacher—settled in Hout Bay, eager to immerse himself in the local sports scene. But something was missing. Despite the valley’s rich sporting culture, there was no dedicated rugby club for young players.

Inspired by the Springboks’ victory and convinced that Hout Bay was brimming with untapped talent, Ed decided to take matters into his own hands. What began as a casual training session in a friend’s backyard quickly sparked something bigger. The raw enthusiasm, energy, and natural ability of the kids made one thing clear — Hout Bay was ready for its own rugby club.

Enter the Hout Bay Rugby Club - home of the Hout Bay Honey Badgers — named after one of nature’s toughest and most fearless creatures. The honey badger’s intelligence, resilience, and determination are the very qualities we cultivate in our young players, both on and off the field.

Open to boys and girls from Grade R to Grade 7, the club isn’t just about rugby — it’s about strengthening the fabric of the Hout Bay community. Through the love of the game, we bring children from all backgrounds together, fostering friendships, teamwork, and a sense of belonging.

But this is just the beginning....Our vision is to expand into older age groups and establish a vibrant community clubhouse providing a safe and welcoming space where children can develop their skills, stay active, receive nutritious meals, and get the academic support they need to thrive.

The Honey Badgers Rugby Academy is more than a sports program; it’s a movement to empower the next generation of Hout Bay’s youth, both on and off the field.

Honey Badgers Hout Bay Rugby is a registered NPO (2025/056778/08).
